BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO SEYCHELLES

Wondering about the best time to travel to Seychelles? Seychelles has a tropical climate throughout the year, but rainfall, humidity, wind and sea conditions change with the seasons. Understanding these seasonal patterns can help you choose the right period for beaches, snorkeling, boat tours, island excursions and other outdoor activities.

Seychelles Weather Throughout the Year

Seychelles experiences distinct seasonal changes influenced by the northwest monsoon and southeast trade winds. The Seychelles Meteorological Authority describes January as part of the peak rainy season, while July is generally the coolest and driest period.

January to March

These months fall within the wetter part of the year.

January is typically very wet and humid, with tropical showers and occasional thunderstorms. However, sunny periods can still occur, so rainfall does not necessarily mean that your entire holiday will be wet.

By February and March, rainfall generally begins to decrease.

Good for:

  • Tropical beach experiences
  • Island exploration
  • Warm-weather holidays
  • Snorkeling when sea conditions are suitable

April

April is a transition period between the northwest monsoon and southeast trade winds.

The Seychelles Meteorological Authority describes April as a period of light and variable winds, with generally pleasant sea conditions, although occasional tropical showers can still occur.

May

May marks the beginning of the southeast trade-wind period. The weather becomes drier, while gentle winds can provide relief from the heat.

June to August

This period is generally drier and cooler.

The Seychelles Meteorological Authority identifies June to August as the peak of the dry season, with southeast trade winds bringing relatively cooler and drier conditions.

However, stronger southeast winds can also create rougher sea conditions, particularly during parts of June, July and August.

This is important when planning:

  • Boat tours
  • Snorkeling
  • Swimming
  • Island hopping
  • Sailing

September and October

The southeast trade winds begin to weaken toward September and October.

October is described by the Seychelles Meteorological Authority as having a high number of dry days, while winds become weaker.

November and December

The wetter season gradually returns.

November can still have plenty of sunshine, while December is generally wetter and more humid. Sea conditions can nevertheless be pleasant at times because winds are generally lighter.

When Is the Best Time for Boat Tours?

There isn’t one single month that is perfect for every traveller.

The best period depends on:

  • Your preferred activities
  • Wind conditions
  • Sea conditions
  • Rainfall
  • Which islands you want to visit

Always check the latest weather and marine conditions before a boat excursion. The Seychelles Meteorological Authority provides current weather and marine information.

Plan Your Trip Around Your Activities

If your main goal is beach relaxation, your preferred travel period may differ from someone planning extensive sailing or boat excursions.

For boat activities, always consider the actual sea conditions on the day, rather than relying only on the month.
